HAPPY FEBRUARY BEAUTIES.
February is the month of love and what better person to start loving on than yourself. Self-care is a really big deal nowadays....It's the trend. Every day (especially after a stressful day), we realize the importance of taking care of ourselves. When I first heard the term "self-care", my first thought was going out and getting my nails done and my hair "did". I never knew that it meant so much more than just looking pretty.
There is so much information about self-care. A good google search will help you find a good regiment that fits your lifestyle. Finding the time to de-stress is very important and making sure you take time to relax and recharge is not only good for your body, but good for your mental health as well. So for balance, we have to start practicing the right type of self care.
There are 5 self care regiments that we all must start to incorporate into our lives in order to have that sense of balance.
1. PHYSICAL

Of course, it's obvious that we must take care of our bodies. I mean, it's the only one we have and if we don't take care of it...who will? Practicing self-care involves you taking control of your physical health. Exercising, eating more fruits and vegetables, taking a break when needed, drinking more water during the day, etc., are all good starts to keeping yourself in tip top shape. However, getting your nails and hair done is still on the list. I mean Sis....you still gotta look cute.
2. EMOTIONAL

This is one of the most neglected forms of self-care out there, but it is no less important. When your overstressed, your overemotional. And when your overemotional, your not in the right mind space to make clear decisions (trust me, I know). However, you have to find an outlet to get those emotions out. My go-to is journaling. Journaling lets me write out all those emotions that I have been holding in all day. Also, a good cry never hurt anyone. Never underestimate the power of a good cry. Crying helps me to release all the other stuff that my journaling couldn't help me with. Once I have released all that toxic energy, my mind and spirit are at peace and I am able to regroup and make better choices.
3. Mental

Mental Self Care is another overlooked area. Now, how crazy is it to take care of your body, but not your mind? Who does that? Is your brain not a part of your body? Of course it is. That is why it is important to keep your mind in tip top shape as well. Staying mentally active protects and preserves your brain functions. If you need another incentive, keeping mentally active might lower the risk of dementia. Your can read more about that at www.alz.org. There are many ways to get your brain in motion. Puzzles, reading, learning a new skill or even taking a course in the area of your choice are great starts to getting your mind right. Last month, I learned how to make bath and beauty products and this month I am learning Spanish (how cool is that?).
4. SPIRITUAL

Spiritual self care can take on many forms depending on what you believe in. Regardless of your religious beliefs, the result is to focus on something bigger than yourself. That may mean spending time in prayer, mediating, becoming one with nature or attending a spiritual service. Getting in touch with your spiritual side helps take the focus off of you, keeps you grounded, put things in perspective and helps give you a clear look at what things are important.
5. SOCIAL

Look, Stranger Danger is real and I am not someone who puts her trust in everybody. However, being around other humans is very important for your self care journey. It is so important to build relationships outside of social media. Building healthy relationships can really be a benefit to your mental and emotional health. Having face to face conversation with your sister friends will boost your confidence and create a connection that no Facebook comment could ever do. So I challenge you today, to go pick up that friend who makes you laugh until you cry and treat her to lunch and a movie. I promise, you won't regret it.
So, if you are having some difficulty finding a good self care routine, Please join me February 8 for my 21 day Self Care Challenge in my Facebook group http://bit.ly/inspirehercommunity. It's free to join and it will be a great way to start your journey. Hope to see you there.
